Amazon Build It Program Launches with Cuckoo's Smartwatch

The company's latest plan for the Day 1 Edition program allows you to select the following devices to work with Alexa.

Amazon launched the Echo Frames program as part of the Day 1 Editions program in 2019. Now the company is adding a new plan called Build It, which allows customers to vote on pre-order for which devices they would like to see Alexa work with next.

The company will periodically introduce new concepts for pre-order, Amazon said in a blog post Wednesday. Each concept will have a number of pre-orders. If an idea reaches that number within 30 days, Amazon will build it (see what did it do there?) And customers will be charged for their order when it is delivered at a special lock-in price.

What should I do if the concept fails? If an idea doesn't get enough pre-orders, Amazon won't charge those who placed the order. There are three concepts available for pre-order now will be open until March 19. Each concept requires a compatible Echo device like the Echo Dot to work with Alexa commands. Here's what's planned:

A cuckoo smartwatch

Equal parts kitsch and smarts, this concept will work with Alexa for time-oriented voice commands like "Alexa, set a 10-minute timer" or "Alexa set an alarm for 5m". It will include 60 LEDs, mechanical cuckoo birds and built-in speakers for alarm sounds. It will be wall-mountable, but the pendulum is removable if you decide to perch it on the shelf. The Smart Cuckoo watch is available at a pre-sale price of $80.

Smart Sticky Note Printer

If you rely on reminders, Amazon's smart sticky note printer is here to take your money. It uses voice-to-print technology and thermal printing, so it never needs ink or toners. There will be a paper roll refilling, so factor that in to your vote. Ask Alexa to print out a sticky note for a special pre-order price of $90.

 Smart Food Scale

The Amazon Smart Scale concept works with Alexa and when it's paired with the Echo Show you'll be able to view nutritional food information at a glance. The information is based on Alexa's weight and memory about your frequently used products. Ask: "Alexa, ask the Smart Scale how much sugar is in this blueberry," or" Alexa, ask the Smart Scale to weigh 200 calories of blueberries." This is probably the most complex concept in the bunch, and surprisingly, the cheapest. You can pre-order the Smart food scale for $35.
